This year begins for us in north eastern Australia. In a tropical paradise my parents now call home, after living my entire life in Melbourne and now calling Spain home for the last 4 years, we find ourselves visiting a foreign homeland when we return to Oz. Landing in Brisbane is always a reverse culture shock where I can’t believe my ears, surrounded by Australian accents and English speaking natives in every corner. We are met with sticky humidity, endless sunshine and amazing early morning light (we get up at 5:30am when we’re here) which gets you in instant holiday mode.

We are lucky enough to spend the European winter here while the van is safely locked up in Barcelona. We are staying in a big house with gorgeous tropical gardens and a pool. We used HappyHouseSitters.Com and found a great place to stay with pets and gardens to tend to, something I crave when living on the road so it suits us perfectly.

We also have access to ripe mangoes. Every. Damn. Day. Lucky is an understatement. After acquiring the first (of many) cases of mangoes, and a few bits and pieces from the farmer’s market, we are enjoying these smoothies every morning. I am so grateful, especially given the alternative we would be living in the northern hemisphere right about now.

This smoothie is a good immune boost, with manuka honey and turmeric, plus it’s easy to drink early in the morning, as the daylight hours are extremely different to Spain. It gets light about 5:30am and dark at 6pm, such a contrast to our northern hemisphere days. Something I struggle with is eating anything before about 9am. Here I would be in a right state with no food for three and a half hours! These smoothies are easy to drink and packed with nutritious elements to fuel your day or your holiday :)


Golden Smoothies

Ingredients: (for two people)

  • 350 ml chilled Almond milk

  • 2 bananas

  • 1 mango, peeled and chopped

  • 8-10 passionfruits

  • 2 teaspoons turmeric powder or 3cm knob fresh, grated

  • 2 teaspoons Manuka honey


Blend everything except passion fruit, stir pulp in last and serve immediately.
